Gujarat Tops States in DPIIT Startup Ecosystem Rankings
Overview

Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, and Goa have been recognized as 'best performers' in the latest Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) rankings for fostering startup ecosystems. Gujarat secured the top spot for the fifth consecutive time. The report highlights the significant growth of India's startup sector, with over 200,000 registered startups generating millions of jobs and attracting international collaboration.

Gujarat Leads States in Startup Ecosystem Development

Gujarat, alongside Arunachal Pradesh and Goa, has earned the designation of 'best performer' in the latest state and Union Territory rankings by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). This marks the fifth consecutive year Gujarat has achieved this top-tier recognition.

Top Performers Recognized

Karnataka, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh were also categorized as 'top performers' in the annual exercise. The DPIIT ranking evaluates efforts made by states and UTs to cultivate environments conducive to startup growth, with 34 entities participating across five categories: best performers, top performers, leaders, aspiring leaders, and emerging startup ecosystems.

Scale of National Startup Growth

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal noted the remarkable expansion of India's startup initiative, launched in 2016 with approximately 400 startups. The sector now boasts over 200,000 registered startups, collectively creating an estimated 2.1 million jobs. These ventures are active across more than 50 sectors, including advanced fields like Deep Tech, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Quantum Computing, Agri-Tech, and Space Technology.

Global Collaboration Opportunities

India is actively pursuing international partnerships, with nearly 100 countries expressing interest in establishing 'startup bridges'. Free Trade Agreements with developed economies are seen as crucial for building investor confidence and opening new markets for Indian goods and services. Goyal encouraged startups to leverage these opportunities for global expansion and investment, emphasizing collaborations in areas like sustainability, renewable energy, and advanced technologies. Andhra Pradesh is noted as an emerging drone capital, while Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are highlighted as hubs for deep tech and AI.
