Production Gap and Contradictions

The Adani Enterprises' Kutch copper plant, which began operations ten months ago, is facing significant production hurdles. While aiming for an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes, the plant reportedly produced just 94,000 tonnes between April 2023 and February 2024, and was temporarily closed for repairs in late March. This starkly contrasts with the company's assertions of steady progress. Independent satellite data from Earth-i further casts doubt, showing no sustained smelting activity since June 2025, contradicting claims of full operational capacity. This underperformance raises concerns about the plant's contribution to global copper supply outside China and Adani's project execution capabilities. Currently, Adani Enterprises Ltd. (ADANIENT.NS) shares are trading around ₹2,435 with a P/E of 22.75x, below the industry average of 49.98x, though analysts maintain a 'Buy' rating with targets between INR 2,600 and INR 2,900.

Feedstock Purity and Supply Shortages

The primary reason for these operational issues is the high impurity level in the copper concentrate feedstock, including elements like antimony, arsenic, and uranium. These contaminants disrupt the crucial smelting process and affect the purity of the final copper and sulfuric acid. The 500,000-tonne plant requires approximately 1.6 million tonnes of concentrate annually, but import records indicate only about a quarter of this has been secured between February 2024 and February 2026. This scarcity is compounded by a tight global market, where China, accounting for 50% of global smelting capacity, is becoming more self-sufficient. While Indian peer Hindalco imported over 1 million tonnes in a similar period, Kutch Copper managed only 147,000 tonnes, highlighting a significant gap in raw material sourcing.

Execution Challenges and Outlook

These execution challenges, coupled with supply chain vulnerabilities, reveal structural weaknesses within Adani's operations. The discrepancy between public statements and reality, as evidenced by satellite data, is a key concern. The reliance on the open market for such a large volume of concentrate is particularly risky in the current supply-constrained environment. Past Adani Group project delays and recent reputational issues, such as the US bribery probe affecting Adani Green Energy, also add to investor concerns about the group's ability to manage complex projects effectively. While consultancies had forecast significant contributions to global supply in 2026 (175,000 to 385,000 tonnes), these ongoing technical and feedstock challenges may necessitate a reassessment, potentially worsening the global raw material squeeze and impacting copper-reliant industries. The success of Adani's copper ambitions hinges on securing reliable feedstock and overcoming these operational hurdles.
