India rPET Capacity: Rules aa gaye, capacity bani, par challenges abhi bhi hain!
Overview

Lo bhai, India ne food-grade packaging ke liye recycled PET (rPET) ki capacity toh bana li hai, aur FSSAI se approval bhi mil gaya hai. Par lagta hai kaam itna aasan nahi hoga, kyuki kuch bade hurdles abhi bhi baaki hain jo brands aur recyclers ko pareshan kar sakte hain.

Okay, toh scene yeh hai ki April 1, 2026 se, India mein food-grade PET packaging mein 40% recycled content hona mandatory hai. Pehle se hi rigid packaging ke liye 30% ka rule tha jo FY25-26 se apply ho raha hai, aur aage jaake yeh 60% tak jaayega FY28-29 tak.

Is rule ko follow karne ke liye, desh ke andar lagbhag 3 lakh metric tons ki food-grade rPET capacity khadi kar di gayi hai. Is sab mein ₹9,000-10,000 crore ka paisa laga hai. FSSAI ne bhi 17 recycling plants ko authorized kar diya hai, toh bottling ke liye lagbhag aadhe PET requirement toh recycled material se poore ho sakte hain. Yeh global virgin PET supply chain ki uncertainties ko dekhte hue kaafi important development hai.

Par bhai, ye itna bhi seedha nahi hai. Food-grade quality maintain karna, jo bilkul pure ho, yeh ek bada challenge hai. Informal collection se bottles mein milawat aa sakti hai. Aur ek aur badi baat, yeh recycled PET (rPET) na, virgin PET ke muqable 15-30% mehnga padta hai. Jab crude oil sasta hota hai, toh virgin PET aur bhi cheap ho jata hai, jisse brands ke liye rPET use karna mushkil ho jata hai.

Aur toh aur, sarkari rules mein jo flexibility aa rahi hai na, usne sab confusion badha diya hai. Jaise June 2025 mein naye amendments aaye hain, jisme brands FY25-26 ke 30% mandate ko miss karne par teen saal tak shortfall ko carry forward kar sakte hain. Is se market mein uncertainty badh gayi hai. Companies ne buying rok di hai, recyclers se orders kam ho gaye hain, aur kuch plants full capacity par chal bhi nahi paa rahe. APR Bharat bhi keh raha hai ki is ambiguity se investors ka confidence down ho raha hai aur jo 20 lakh se zyada rag pickers hain, unki livelihood par bhi asar pad raha hai. Yeh market instability circular economy ke vision ko kamzor kar sakti hai.

Quality ko consistent rakhna bhi ek head-ache hai, kyuki recycling supply chain kaafi scattered hai. Agar quality kharab mili, toh brands regulations fail kar sakte hain. Virgin PET ke price mein fluctuations bhi rPET ke use ko affect kar sakte hain. Companies jaise Alternicq innovation se sustainable demands poori karne ki koshish kar rahi hain, par chote players ke liye yeh sab mushkil ho sakta hai.

Aage jaake packaging industry toh badhegi hi, PET resin market USD 5.42 million tak pahunch sakta hai 2033 tak, food, beverage aur pharma sector se demand ke karan. Yeh rPET mandate sustainability ki taraf ek badha step hai, par iski success regulatory enforcement, stable rPET pricing, aur advanced tech mein investment par depend karegi. Brands ka rPET price premium accept karna aur government ka policy continuity par commitment bahut zaroori hoga.
