The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 4,200 confirmed cases and 1,900 deaths. Health authorities have identified it as the fastest-growing epidemic of its kind on record, complicated by the spread of a rare virus strain and significant regional operational challenges.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is now the fastest-growing Ebola epidemic ever recorded. Although the official declaration of the outbreak occurred on May 15, 2026, health officials have determined that the virus began circulating as early as February 2026. This delay in initial identification, compounded by rapid transmission, has created a critical situation for public health authorities.

Impact of the Rare Bundibugyo Strain

This specific outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a rare variant for which there are currently no widely approved vaccines or treatments.
