India is strengthening its defence and energy cooperation with Angola and Botswana, preparing for President Droupadi Murmu's state visit from November 8 to 13. Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary of Economic Relations at the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted defence cooperation and lines of credit as key focus areas.
India is ready to extend a $200 million Line of Credit (LoC) to Angola for defence sector cooperation, with final agreements underway. This builds on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's earlier announcement of this credit line for modernizing Angola's defence forces. India already has a significant energy partnership with Angola, with bilateral trade reaching $5 billion, of which 80% is in the energy sector, crucial for India's energy security.
The National Critical Minerals Mission is also driving engagement with Angola and Botswana, exploring joint ventures for processing critical minerals essential for electric vehicles and other sectors. With Botswana, India maintains a historic defence partnership, including decades of training provided by Indian teams.
India also continues to offer assistance through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme, having trained nearly 750 professionals from Botswana in various fields, including defence. India remains open to collaborations in emerging areas like cybersecurity. President Murmu's visit is expected to significantly boost India's engagement with the African continent in these strategic areas.
Impact: This initiative will strengthen India's geopolitical standing in Africa, enhance its energy security through deeper ties with Angola, and potentially boost its defence exports and training capabilities. Collaboration on critical minerals is vital for India's industrial and technological growth. Rating: 7/10
Difficult Terms: Line of Credit (LoC): A financial commitment from a bank or institution to lend funds up to a certain limit. India is offering Angola a credit line to purchase defence equipment. National Critical Minerals Mission: An Indian government initiative aimed at ensuring a stable supply of critical minerals necessary for the nation's strategic industries, such as defence and renewable energy. ITEC Programme (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme): A program by India's Ministry of External Affairs that provides technical assistance and training to developing countries, fostering bilateral cooperation.
