Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi Resigns From Lok Sabha

Srinagar Lok Sabha MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has officially resigned from the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and his parliamentary seat, citing unfulfilled 2024 election promises. This departure creates a vacancy in the Srinagar constituency, setting the stage for an upcoming by-election and signaling rising political friction within the ruling party.

Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi formally resigned from both the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) and his Lok Sabha seat on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The announcement, made during a public gathering in Budgam, marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. Following the announcement, Mehdi submitted his formal resignation to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, under Article 101(3)(b) of the Constitution of India.

Mehdi, who has been a prominent voice within the region, cited a fundamental betrayal of the promises made to the electorate during the 2024 assembly elections. His grievances focus on the failure to restore Article 370, as well as unresolved issues surrounding reservation policies, job creation, and the delivery of free electricity provisions. He argued that the current party leadership had deviated from its core commitments, leading him to sever ties with the organization and step down from his representative role.

This resignation carries immediate implications for the Srinagar parliamentary constituency, which now faces a vacancy. Under the Representation of the People Act, the Election Commission of India will be required to announce a schedule for a by-election to fill the seat within the stipulated timeframe. For observers of the region’s political and economic climate, this development is notable as it reflects internal challenges within the ruling administration led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Political stability is a key factor that often influences regional policy execution and investor sentiment. The departure of a senior leader like Mehdi and the subsequent by-election process introduce a period of political transition in the valley. While the immediate focus remains on the electoral process, the move also highlights potential pressure on the governing coalition as it navigates internal dissent and public expectations regarding governance and policy implementation.

The resignation follows months of public friction between Mehdi and the senior party leadership, with the former MP taking a more independent stance on issues such as student protests and policy reforms. By distancing himself from the National Conference, Mehdi has moved to an independent political position, which may influence alliances in future local and national legislative sessions. The primary monitorable for citizens and stakeholders in the region will be the timeline for the by-election and how the National Conference addresses the issues raised by the departing leader.
