Saudi Arabia Forms Mecca Defence Pact Amid Houthi Attacks

Saudi Arabia is mobilizing a new security coalition, the Mecca Defence Pact, involving Pakistan and Türkiye, following escalated Houthi strikes on infrastructure. The situation has triggered the postponement of the Future Investment Initiative, often called 'Davos in the Desert.' Investors are watching for potential disruptions to Red Sea trade routes and global shipping costs.

Saudi Arabia is moving to form a new security coalition, known as the Mecca Defence Pact, in response to intensifying strikes from Houthi insurgents. The escalation, which recently included a direct attack on Riyadh’s international airport, has prompted the Kingdom to recalibrate its defense strategy. This move signals a significant shift from relying primarily on U.S. support to building a broader regional and European alliance to protect its national infrastructure and critical assets.

The alliance brings together key regional players, including Pakistan and Türkiye, to provide defensive support. Pakistan is expected to contribute its counterinsurgency expertise to manage the challenging terrain in Yemen, while Türkiye is positioned to act as a naval anchor, potentially deploying frigates to protect major ports like Yanbu and the crucial East-West oil pipeline. European involvement is also deepening, with efforts to expand defensive naval missions to ensure the safety of commercial transit through the Red Sea.

For global investors, the primary concern remains the stability of the Red Sea shipping corridor. Approximately 15% of global trade flows through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, making it one of the world's most vital maritime arteries. Persistent security threats in this region can lead to higher freight insurance costs, supply chain delays, and potential volatility in global energy prices. The seriousness of the current environment is reflected in the official decision to postpone the Future Investment Initiative, the Kingdom's flagship investment summit often referred to as 'Davos in the Desert.'

While the Mecca Defence Pact aims to establish a credible deterrent and bring insurgents back to the negotiating table, the short-term outlook remains cautious. The primary focus for the market will be the effectiveness of this coalition in securing shipping lanes and reducing the frequency of attacks. Investors will likely watch for updates on the rescheduling of the postponed investment event and any reports on shipping insurance premiums, as these will serve as key indicators of how the regional security situation is evolving.
