Fresh ethnic clashes in Manipur have led to the death of an electric lineman and the burning of 24 homes in Tamenglong and Kangpokpi districts. The incident highlights the persistent security instability in the region, which has faced intermittent violence since May 2023.
Fresh incidents of violence have been reported in Manipur’s hill districts, resulting in the death of a field worker and the destruction of residential property. An electric lineman, identified as 36-year-old Paojangam Chongloi, was killed while performing maintenance work on a 33 KV power line in the Tamenglong district. Following this, approximately 24 homes were set on fire in the Makui Khuman and Makui Thanamba villages located in the Kangpokpi district.
The region has been grappling with ethnic instability since May 2023, and these latest attacks underscore the ongoing security challenges in remote hill areas. The affected villages were largely vacant at the time of the arson, as residents had previously relocated due to past hostilities.
