Manipur has been facing significant challenges due to a sharp increase in airfares and a decline in flight services from Imphal. This situation, compounded by the lack of reliable railway and road connectivity, has caused immense hardship to the people of the state. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla appealed to the Union Civil Aviation Minister for urgent intervention to restore and enhance air connectivity, particularly to Guwahati and Kolkata.
In response to these concerns, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has approved two new daily flights originating from Imphal: one to Guwahati and another to Kolkata. Furthermore, Air India Express has decided to cap the fares for the Imphal-Guwahati sector at Rs 6,000. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also confirmed these developments, noting that the ministry is working towards a fare cap of around Rs 7,000. This prompt action by the government and the airline is expected to bring much-needed relief to travelers and improve accessibility for the region.
Impact: This news significantly impacts Manipur by improving travel accessibility and potentially reducing costs for its residents. It also demonstrates a responsive approach from the central government and aviation authorities towards regional connectivity needs. For the Indian aviation sector, it highlights efforts to ensure essential services in challenging regions. Rating: 7/10.
Difficult Terms: Air Connectivity: The availability and frequency of air travel services between different locations. Fare Cap: A maximum limit set on the price that can be charged for a flight ticket. Geographical and Infrastructural Challenges: Difficulties arising from the region's physical location (e.g., mountains, remoteness) and the state of its facilities like roads, railways, and airports.
