Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated and laid the foundation for a suite of development projects totaling ₹1,500 crore in Mangaluru. These include 16 key infrastructure projects and 113 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at community development and port enhancement.
The event, coinciding with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), also highlighted a remarkable surge in investor confidence. NMPA alone signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹52,000 crore out of a total of ₹12 lakh crore signed during the India Maritime Week. Minister Sonowal emphasized that this signifies a strong belief in India's transformed maritime ecosystem and its journey towards becoming one of the top three maritime nations globally.
Further developments included the inauguration of the renovated Mangalore Marine College and Technology (MMCT) campus and a new ₹9.51 crore office building for the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) in Mangalore. The MMD facility will streamline competency examinations for seafarers from Karnataka and neighbouring states.
NMPA's evolution was traced from its 1975 inception to its current status as a powerhouse handling over 46 million tonnes of cargo annually across 16 berths and a Single Point Mooring facility. The port aims to reach 100 million tonnes capacity by 2047. It is notably India's largest coffee exporter and second-largest LPG importer, boasting 92% operational mechanization, which significantly boosts logistics efficiency and safety.
Impact: This wave of investment and development is set to significantly boost India's trade capabilities, improve logistics efficiency, create employment opportunities, and foster economic growth, particularly in the southern coastal regions. It directly supports the nation's strategic goal of achieving global leadership in the maritime sector. Rating: 8/10
