Waterways Leisure Q2 Profit Jumps, Notes Exceptional Gain

Waterways Leisure Tourism reported a net profit of Rs 58.49 crore for the September quarter, aided by a Rs 49.5 crore exceptional gain. The operator of Cordelia Cruises is expanding its sailing network from Mumbai and Kochi to international destinations including the Maldives. Investors may track the company's core operational profitability, as a significant portion of this quarter's earnings came from a one-time gain rather than just regular business.

Waterways Leisure Tourism, the operator of Cordelia Cruises, has announced a significant expansion of its sailing network while reporting its financial results for the quarter ending September. The company is scaling operations by using Mumbai and Kochi as primary hubs to increase its reach to domestic and international destinations.

Q2 Financials and Exceptional Gain

For the September quarter, the company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 58.49 crore, showing a turnaround from the Rs 8.9 crore loss reported during the same period last year. Revenue from operations increased to Rs 133 crore, compared to Rs 102 crore in the previous year, representing a growth of 30 percent.

However, investors should note that the reported net profit includes an exceptional gain of Rs 49.5 crore booked by its subsidiary, Bay Cruise Investments Inc. This gain was recorded as non-obligatory compensation for the early delivery of the vessel Sky. Because this is a one-time, non-recurring item, it does not reflect the company's regular operational income. Evaluating the company's ability to generate profit from core cruise operations, rather than one-time accounting gains, will be an important task for investors in the coming quarters.

Strategic Network Expansion

The company is looking to grow its presence by adding new routes. From its hubs in Mumbai and Kochi, the cruise line is now offering weekend sailings alongside voyages to Lakshadweep and Goa. Internationally, the firm has extended its reach to the Maldives and Sri Lanka. As part of this plan, the company has deployed the vessel Cordelia Sky from Mumbai and started seasonal operations for Cordelia Empress from Kochi.

Market Context and History

Waterways Leisure Tourism made its market debut on the NSE and BSE on July 1 following an initial public offering (IPO) of Rs 585 crore. The IPO had seen a subscription rate of 1.46 times. Since listing, the board has taken steps to improve trading liquidity by sub-dividing equity shares, splitting the face value of Rs 10 into 10 shares of Re 1 each. On Monday, October 26, the company's stock closed at Rs 89.33.

Moving forward, the primary monitorable for investors will be the sustainability of the company's operational performance. The success of the expanded routes, cost management during this phase of investment, and the ability to drive core profitability without relying on one-time gains will determine the business trajectory.
