Thiruvananthapuram Court Fines Air India Rs 1.36 Lakh After 9-Year Case

A consumer court in Thiruvananthapuram has ordered Air India to pay Rs 1.36 lakh to a passenger following a 2017 flight delay incident. This verdict concludes a nine-year legal battle, highlighting significant service-related liabilities for the airline. While Air India is not a publicly listed entity, the company continues to face high operational challenges and reported a net loss of Rs 22,238 crore in FY26.

A consumer court in Thiruvananthapuram has directed Air India to pay Rs 1.36 lakh in compensation to a passenger, Kapildev, following a protracted nine-year legal battle. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ruled against the airline, finding it responsible for deficiency in service after a flight delay in September 2017 left the passenger stranded. The total compensation awarded covers Rs 83,000 for documented financial losses, Rs 50,000 for mental agony, and Rs 3,000 to cover litigation expenses.

The Incident and Legal Dispute

The dispute dates back to 2017, when a domestic flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai was delayed by over two hours. This disruption caused the passenger to miss a connecting international flight to Saudi Arabia. According to the complaint, the airline failed to provide necessary support, such as hotel accommodation or meals, during the passenger’s unplanned overnight stay at the airport. This lack of assistance forced the passenger to purchase a new, last-minute ticket at a significant cost, forming the basis of the financial claim that has now been upheld by the court.

Operational and Financial Context

While this legal case focuses on individual consumer rights, it highlights the operational complexities faced by Air India as it undergoes a massive organizational overhaul. It is important for stakeholders to note that Air India is not a publicly listed company, meaning its shares are not traded on the stock exchanges. However, the airline’s financial health is a critical factor for the aviation sector.

For the fiscal year 2026 (FY26), the airline reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 22,238 crore. This figure reflects the significant hurdles the company faces, including legacy issues, supply chain disruptions, and intense competition within the Indian aviation market. The airline is currently implementing a long-term turnaround plan known as Vihaan.AI, which aims to improve service standards and financial sustainability. However, experts note that factors such as global geopolitical headwinds and high operational costs have contributed to a longer-than-expected recovery timeline, now projected to span 5 to 10 years.

Challenges in Passenger Service

The Indian aviation sector continues to face pressure from regulatory bodies to maintain high service standards, especially regarding passenger support during flight disruptions. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the accountability that airlines must uphold under the Consumer Protection Act. For Air India, the primary operational challenge remains balancing the massive capital spending required for fleet expansion and modernization with the need to improve day-to-day passenger experience. Moving forward, the focus for the management will be on reducing operational inefficiencies and addressing service gaps to mitigate the reputational and financial risks associated with consumer grievances.
