Data presented in Parliament by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari shows that India experienced a 5.3% increase in total road accidents during 2025, reaching a total of 5.13 lakh incidents. These accidents led to 1,83,382 fatalities, which highlights a persistent challenge for infrastructure safety. Among the primary reasons for these accidents, over-speeding was identified as a major factor, responsible for 82,124 accidents or roughly 16% of the total nationwide tally.
Factors Contributing to Road Safety Concerns
The government highlighted several specific driver behaviors that contributed to the accident figures. Poor lane discipline and driving on the wrong side of the road were linked to 4,089 accidents. Other documented risks included the use of mobile phones while driving, which caused 136 accidents, and traffic light violations, which resulted in 276 incidents. Regional data indicates that while Tamil Nadu recorded the highest volume of accidents at 71,387, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of fatalities with 27,550 deaths. Preliminary figures for the first half of 2026 show 2,85,770 accidents, indicating that the pressure on road safety management remains high.
Growth in Electric Vehicle Adoption
Parallel to these infrastructure and safety updates, the transportation sector has seen a shift toward electric mobility. Government data from the VAHAN portal shows that electric vehicle (EV) penetration has increased significantly, moving from 0.71% in fiscal year 2019-20 to 8.26% in the 2025-26 fiscal year. As of July 26, 2026, the total number of registered electric vehicles in India surpassed 1 crore across all categories. The government attributes this shift primarily to the lower operational costs associated with electric vehicles compared to traditional internal combustion engines and the focus on zero tailpipe emissions. Investors in the automotive and energy sectors may continue to monitor how these adoption rates influence future government incentives and infrastructure spending, such as the expansion of charging networks, which remain critical for sustaining the growth of the EV market.
