India's Export Potential Under FTA
Renault Group executive Fabrice Cambolive believes the India-European Union free trade agreement (FTA) will not only facilitate imports of premium vehicles into India but crucially, open avenues for India to export automobiles and automotive technologies to Europe. Cambolive stressed the agreement's potential to reshape automotive trade flows, emphasizing a "bi-directional" approach where the competitiveness of Indian-developed products could become attractive for the European market. This suggests a significant shift, moving beyond India solely as a market to a potential hub for automotive innovation and production exports.
Renault's Strategic Focus on India
Renault is undertaking a strategic push in India, underpinned by fresh investments and a series of new product introductions. The French automaker aims for India, alongside Brazil, to contribute nearly half of its global growth in the coming years. This focus comes as Renault deliberately steers clear of the US and Chinese markets, underscoring India's critical role in its international expansion strategy. "India is a strategic market for us. It is where we see growth. It is a market where we can play not just domestically but on exports as well," Cambolive stated.
New Product Offensive: Hybrid Duster
The company is set to introduce hybrid technology in the competitive mid-size SUV segment with the new-generation Duster. Expected around Diwali 2026, the hybrid Duster will compete directly with popular models such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Toyota Hyryder. This move positions Renault to challenge established players by offering advanced, efficient powertrains. The Duster range will also feature Turbo TCe 160 and Turbo TCe 100 engines, catering to different market segments.
Electric Vehicle Strategy
Regarding electric vehicles (EVs) in India, Cambolive clarified that Renault has not abandoned plans but is prioritizing its approach. With the EV market share currently standing at 4-5 percent, the company's immediate objective is to cater to the remaining 95 percent of the market with highly efficient internal combustion engines. However, Renault does not rule out the possibility of launching an EV in India in the coming years.
Market Position and Future Outlook
Despite overall growth in India's passenger vehicle market, which saw a roughly 6 percent expansion between April and December, Renault's volumes remained largely flat, selling 29,763 units. The company ranked ninth among India's major carmakers during this period. The hybrid variant of the Duster will feature a 1.8-litre petrol engine coupled with a 1.4 kWh battery, signaling Renault's commitment to efficiency and market-relevant technologies as it bets heavily on India's significance in its global future.
