Railway and Station Modernization
A significant portion of the rail investment involves the redevelopment of railway stations under the national Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Four specific stations in Punjab—Jalandhar Cantonment, S A S Nagar (Mohali), Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Sri Anandpur Sahib—have been modernized as part of a wider Rs 1,570 crore initiative covering 75 stations across India. These upgrades focus on integrating modern passenger facilities while maintaining local architectural aesthetics.
In addition to station upgrades, the government is commissioning the Daulatpur Chowk-Kartoli rail line, a project costing Rs 830 crore. This line serves as an extension of the Nangal Dam-Talwara-Mukerian corridor, intended to strengthen travel links between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The initiative also includes the introduction of new rail services connecting Amritsar and Varanasi, as well as Kartoli and Ambala, which are expected to improve passenger movement across Northern India.
Road Network Expansion
The road infrastructure package accounts for over Rs 3,070 crore of the total allocation. Key projects include the inauguration of a 30.9-km segment of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway. This expressway is a significant project for Northern India, designed to reduce transit times for both freight and passenger vehicles between major economic hubs. Furthermore, the foundation stone for the 25.2-km six-lane Southern Ludhiana Bypass will be laid. This greenfield project aims to improve connectivity for industrial zones and reduce traffic congestion between Ludhiana and Bathinda.
