Security Clearance Denial Prompts CEO Change
Noida International Airport's operational launch faced a regulatory challenge, leading to a swift leadership change. Chief Financial Officer Nitu Samra has been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer. This interim solution directly addresses the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security's (BCAS) refusal to grant security clearance to former CEO Christoph Schnellmann, citing his non-Indian nationality.
Ensuring Compliance and Continuity in Leadership
Schnellmann, who has led the airport since August 2020, will remain involved in the project as Executive Vice Chairman. Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, the holding company owned by Zurich Airport, confirmed the management shift is designed to meet security regulations while maintaining leadership continuity. Daniel Bircher, Chairman of Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, stressed the aim to launch operations quickly.
Aviation Rules Mandate Indian CEO for Airport Launch
A 2011 aviation security regulation requires the CEO of any new Indian airport to also act as its security coordinator, directly overseeing security implementation. Although Noida International Airport received its aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in March, the Aerodrome Security Programme (ASP) still needs BCAS approval. Samra's appointment is expected to speed up this approval, clearing a key step for the airport's planned flight operations.
