Air India Express Takes Flight at Navi Mumbai International Airport
Air India Express marked a significant milestone on Thursday by inaugurating commercial operations at the brand-new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). As one of the first airlines to launch services on the airport's opening day, the Tata Group-owned carrier commenced direct flights to Bengaluru and Delhi, heralding a new era for air travel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This strategic move is set to enhance aviation capacity and ease the long-standing congestion issues at Mumbai's primary airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
The Inaugural Flights
The historic day began with Air India Express flight IX202 departing for Bengaluru, carrying the first passengers through NMIA. The airline celebrated the occasion with a special ceremony, presenting a commemorative boarding pass to the inaugural passenger. Following the Bengaluru service, the airline's first flight to Delhi, IX878, was scheduled to depart Navi Mumbai at 14:05 hours, arriving in the national capital at 16:20 hours. Initially, Air India Express will operate daily flights to Bengaluru and five weekly services to Delhi.

Aloke Singh, Managing Director of Air India Express, commented on the launch, stating, "The start of flights from Navi Mumbai is a milestone for the city and the region. We are happy to be part of this effort, in enhancing capacity for Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region." He further elaborated that NMIA will be a central pillar in the airline's expansion plans, complementing its extensive operations from CSMIA, where it currently serves 11 domestic and three international destinations. Air India Express plans a significant ramp-up of its operations from NMIA starting January 1, 2026. This includes expanding to twice-daily services to Bengaluru and increasing frequencies to Delhi. The airline has been steadily growing its presence across Maharashtra, operating over 130 weekly flights from Mumbai and around 105 from Pune. Recently, it also launched services from Nagpur, connecting it twice daily to Bengaluru. In parallel with its network expansion, Air India Express has introduced a revitalized cabin experience on its Boeing 737-8 aircraft. The refreshed interiors include new carpets and Boeing Sky Interior mood lighting, aiming to provide a more comfortable and modern travel environment.
