New Era of Rail Travel
Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on Saturday, linking Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya). The train departed from Malda Town Railway Station, enhancing rail connectivity in West Bengal. A virtual flag-off also commenced for the return Guwahati-Howrah Vande Bharat sleeper service.
Journey Time and Experience
This new service significantly slashes travel time on the Howrah-Guwahati route by approximately 2.5 hours. Developed to meet modern transportation demands, the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat Sleeper Train aims to provide passengers with an experience akin to air travel, all at economical fares. This positions it as a key development in India's public transportation network.
Broader Infrastructure Push
During his two-day visit to eastern India, Prime Minister Modi also dedicated and laid the foundation stone for multiple rail and road infrastructure projects collectively valued at ₹3,250 crore. Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the extensive railway development in West Bengal, noting that 101 stations are undergoing redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with an allocated ₹13,000 crore for the state's railway infrastructure.
Political Context
The launch occurs as the countdown to the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections intensifies, signaling the government's focus on infrastructure development and public welfare initiatives in the region.
