Developed at an investment of nearly ₹5,000 crore, this greenfield project is part of a broader infrastructure push in the state, with the Prime Minister also dedicating additional projects worth ₹18,000 crore across the petroleum and transport sectors.
Strategic Infrastructure for North Andhra
The new airport was developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited under a Public-Private Partnership model using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer framework. The project spans 2,703 acres and was completed nearly five months ahead of schedule. With an initial capacity to handle six million passengers annually, the site is designed for long-term scalability, with a master plan that allows for future expansion up to 40 million passengers.
Beyond passenger travel, the airport features a cargo terminal with an annual capacity of 25,000 metric tonnes. This facility is particularly significant for the local economy, as it includes temperature-controlled infrastructure designed to support the export of pharmaceuticals and marine products from North Andhra. By improving connectivity to the Visakhapatnam Port and nearby industrial corridors, the project aims to establish the region as a major logistics hub on India's east coast.
Operational Capability and Investment
The airport is equipped with a 3,800-meter Code-E runway, which allows it to accommodate large wide-body aircraft for international operations. The facility has already received the necessary aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, alongside mandatory safety, fire, and environmental clearances. The Andhra Pradesh government provided ₹1,583 crore for land acquisition and surrounding connectivity improvements, reflecting the state's intent to attract investment in tourism, hospitality, and manufacturing sectors.
For investors, the key monitorable will be the actual cargo throughput and air traffic growth once commercial operations begin, as these metrics will determine how effectively the facility boosts regional industrial activity. While the project is positioned as a catalyst for economic development, its long-term financial success for the operators will depend on achieving the projected passenger volumes and sustained demand from local industries for its logistics and cargo capabilities.
