Fuel Supply Concerns Escalate
Willie Walsh, chief of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), issued a stark warning Wednesday: jet fuel shortages are a distinct possibility for Asia and Europe in the coming months. This looming scarcity stems directly from ongoing supply disruptions and the pervasive geopolitical uncertainties amplified by the conflict in West Asia.
Rising Costs Hit Ticket Prices
Jet fuel represents a significant portion of an airline's operational expenditure. Its price surge, driven by supply chain vulnerabilities, is increasingly reflected in airfares. Walsh noted that while current bookings remain robust for the summer, sustained high prices could eventually alter passenger behavior. Airline resilience is being tested, making fuel supply and price stabilization critical.
Indian Aviation Under Strain
Representing major carriers like IndiGo and SpiceJet, the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) recently alerted the government to the extreme stress on the domestic sector. The industry is reportedly on the brink of operational halts, prompting calls for revised Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) pricing mechanisms and urgent financial aid.
March Traffic Data
IATA's latest passenger traffic report for March indicated a 2.1% rise in demand (RPK) year-on-year. However, total capacity (ASK) saw a 1.7% decrease, leading to a load factor of 83.6%, an increase of 3.1 percentage points from the previous year.
