Overview

Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) will achieve full connectivity with the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) by March 31, 2026. The fully commissioned Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and the near-complete WDFC will transform freight movement. Plans for three new corridors, totaling ₹4.5 lakh crore, are advancing, signaling a major push in India's logistics infrastructure.

WDFC Nears Completion

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) is on track for full commissioning during fiscal year 2025-26. Officials confirmed that the crucial last-mile connectivity to Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) is in its final stages. A senior official stated, "The full WDFC service will be operational before March 31, 2026." This development follows a recent coordination meeting between Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) officials, focusing on the 102-kilometer JNPT-Vaitarna section.

EDFC Fully Operational

The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), spanning 1,337 kilometers from Ludhiana to Sonnagar, has already been fully commissioned. The WDFC, stretching 1,506 kilometers from JNPT to Dadri, has seen 1,404 kilometers commissioned as of the end of December. Together, these two corridors represent 2,843 kilometers of dedicated freight routes.

Future Corridor Plans

The review of the JNPT-Vaitarna section included discussions on construction, signaling, and associated infrastructure. Its completion is expected to significantly boost freight movement between JNPT and key consumption and production centers in the northern hinterland, including the National Capital Region (NCR), Haryana, Rajasthan, and Punjab. Beyond these two major corridors, DFCCIL has prepared detailed project reports for three new freight corridors valued at ₹4.5 lakh crore. These include the East Coast Freight Corridor (Kharagpur to Vijaywada), an East-West Corridor (Kharagpur to Palghar), and a North-South Freight Corridor (Vijaywada to Itarsi), with approvals prioritized in that sequence.
