Next-Gen Bullet Train Design
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced India's next indigenous high-speed train will reach speeds of 350 kilometers per hour. Design work for this advanced train is scheduled to start within six months, marking a significant advancement in the country's rail technology. This project is part of a larger effort to modernize India's railway infrastructure and improve operational efficiency.
Boosting Rail Cargo
Alongside high-speed rail, Indian Railways is increasing efforts to promote containerization for domestic cargo. This initiative supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal to reduce fuel consumption from road transport, aiming to make logistics smoother and cut costs. The minister mentioned that rules for rail-based domestic container movement will be simplified. This strategy is especially important due to recent increases in crude oil prices linked to geopolitical events in West Asia. Trade groups have been consulted on necessary policy changes.
Sector Growth in Rail Freight
Indian Railways is expanding its container and parcel services through financial incentives and new offerings. Vaishnaw noted strong growth in loading for cement, automobiles, and salt. The next focus is on improving fly ash transit. Financial projections for 2026-27 estimate annual earnings from cement loading to reach over ₹14,315 crore (a 7% increase), and domestic container income to grow 8% year-on-year to approximately ₹3,800 crore.
Passenger Travel and Safety
While cargo and parcel services are a focus, enhancing passenger travel is also key. The minister confirmed that upcoming high-speed trains will be adapted for India's diverse climates. Safety is a top priority for the Railway Board this fiscal year, even with technological progress. Vaishnaw also stated that about 70,000 km of rail lines have been built in the last decade, allowing over 80% of the network to handle trains up to 110 kmph.
