India’s push for sustainable railway technology hit a new milestone as the country's first hydrogen-powered passenger train logged approximately 900 kilometers of operational service in its first five days. The train, which began commercial operations on July 17, runs on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. This project is a key part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and find cleaner energy sources for tracks that are not yet electrified.

Technology and Operational Setup

The train uses advanced hydrogen-electric propulsion systems, each rated at 1,200 kilowatts. By using onboard fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, the train emits only water vapor and heat. This makes it a clean alternative to the traditional Diesel Multiple Units (DMU) currently used on many regional lines. To support this operation, Indian Railways has established a dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at the Jind station, which serves as the primary hub for the project.

Scaling and Future Prospects

While the train is technically designed to reach a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour, it is currently operating at a maximum speed of 75 kilometers per hour as part of the pilot phase. This initial period is critical for gathering data on fuel efficiency, maintenance requirements, and overall reliability. The choice of the Jind-Sonipat corridor allows Northern Railway to test the technology in a real-world environment before considering a wider rollout on other regional, remote, or heritage lines where full electrification may be costly or difficult to implement.

For commuters, the introduction of this new technology has not resulted in higher costs. Fares remain in the range of Rs 10 to Rs 25, matching the rates of conventional diesel services. This pricing strategy is intended to ensure that the transition to new technology does not place a financial burden on regular passengers.

Investors and observers will be watching the next stages of this pilot to understand the cost-benefit analysis of hydrogen rail compared to traditional electrification. The key monitorables moving forward include the scalability of the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, the long-term maintenance costs of the fuel cell units, and how the technology performs as it is tested at higher speeds and on more challenging terrains.
