Indian Railways has launched an online system for passengers to book and pay for excess luggage on reserved trains, effective July 31. This update aims to reduce manual paperwork at parcel offices and improve passenger convenience by allowing digital tracking. Users must still present their e-Forwarding Note at the station for final weight verification and payment processing.
Starting July 31, 2026, Indian Railways has introduced a digital booking service for passengers carrying excess personal luggage on reserved trains. This initiative allows travelers with confirmed tickets to log into the official Indian Railways parcel portal to register their extra baggage in advance, aiming to reduce the time spent at physical parcel offices before boarding.
Digital Booking and Tracking Process
Passengers can now initiate the process by logging into the railway parcel portal and filling out a Forwarding Note. The system provides an estimate of the freight charges based on the weight and distance. After submitting the details online, travelers receive an e-Forwarding Note. It is important to note that the final weight and actual charges are determined at the station, where passengers must present this note at the parcel office or designated godown. Once the baggage is weighed and the final fee is paid, a formal Railway Receipt is issued for the shipment. The system also includes a tracking feature, allowing passengers to monitor their luggage status and receive SMS updates upon arrival at the destination station.
Baggage Limits and Size Rules
The free allowance for luggage remains tied to the class of travel. For example, AC First Class passengers receive a 70 kg free allowance, while those in Sleeper Class receive 40 kg. In classes where the free allowance is lower, such as AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the maximum limit is capped at 40 kg. Indian Railways has also clarified size restrictions to ensure space management within coaches. For most classes, bags must not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm, while for AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the dimensions are restricted to 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm to fit under or above seats.
Charges and Financial Impact
Luggage that exceeds the free weight allowance is charged at 1.5 times the standard luggage rate, with a minimum charge of ₹30. Charges are calculated in 10 kg slabs for a minimum distance of 50 km. While this online service digitizes the administrative side of baggage handling, it does not change the underlying tariff structure. For the IRCTC and Indian Railways, this shift toward digital documentation may improve operational data collection and reduce the administrative burden on station staff. Investors and passengers should monitor whether this move reduces station crowding during peak travel periods and if the digital interface successfully integrates with the actual cargo loading process at busy terminals.
