The Union government plans to implement a nationwide barrier-free, multi-lane free-flow tolling system by March 2027, projecting an annual revenue increase of Rs 25,000 crore. By combining FASTag and camera-based technology, the initiative aims to cut collection costs from current double-digit levels down to 2-4%. Investors and industry observers should track the technological transition, as it is expected to significantly improve national logistics efficiency.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has unveiled plans to shift the country to a fully automated tolling network by March 2027. The government aims to replace traditional, physical toll plazas with a barrier-free system that allows vehicles to pass through without stopping. This transition relies on Multi-Lane Free-Flow technology and Automatic Number Plate Recognition, which identifies vehicles through high-resolution cameras.
For the broader economy and the infrastructure sector, the shift is significant because of the potential impact on revenue and operational efficiency. Current estimates suggest that government toll collection costs hover between 12% and 15%. The new digital infrastructure aims to reduce these expenses to between 2% and 4%. By plugging revenue leakages, the government projects an annual income boost of Rs 20,000 crore to Rs 25,000 crore.
Beyond fiscal gains, the move addresses persistent logistics bottlenecks. Physical toll plazas have historically been major points of congestion, increasing fuel consumption and delivery times for freight transport. A smoother, non-stop flow of traffic is expected to lower these hidden logistics costs, which has long been a key objective for the country’s supply chain efficiency. With FASTag collections already exceeding Rs 82,000 crore, the government is building on an existing digital foundation to push for 100% compliance.
However, the rollout involves complex operational risks that investors and stakeholders should monitor. Moving from a physical system to a fully sensor-based network requires flawless technical integration. Any technical failure in reading license plates, especially during adverse weather or due to damaged plates, could lead to billing errors or revenue leakage. Furthermore, the success of the project depends on the enforcement framework. The government has already introduced a 72-hour payment window for unpaid passages, but ensuring that non-compliant vehicle owners pay penalties will require a robust regulatory and legal backbone.
The government expects 60% to 70% of toll plazas to be converted to this barrier-free model by the end of 2026. As the rollout progresses, the primary monitorable will be the system's uptime and its ability to handle high traffic volumes without compromising accuracy. Success in this transition could set a new standard for infrastructure efficiency, while operational delays or technical glitches could affect the speed of cost reduction and revenue realization.
