IndiGo Faces Widespread Flight Disruptions
Thousands of travelers found themselves stranded across airports as India's largest airline, IndiGo, cancelled a significant number of flights. On Saturday alone, the airline cancelled 41 flights at Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, comprising 21 arrivals and 20 departures. This followed the cancellation of 47 flights at the same airport the previous day. Across four major airports, IndiGo cancelled over 400 flights on Saturday.
These widespread disruptions are reportedly due to temporary relaxations sought by IndiGo in new flight duty and rest period norms mandated for its cockpit crew.
Air India Steps In with Passenger Support Measures
In response to the ongoing crisis, Tata Group-owned Air India announced a series of measures to support passengers affected by IndiGo's flight cancellations. The airline aims to alleviate the stress and inconvenience faced by stranded travelers.
- Waiver on Fees: Air India has introduced a special, one-time waiver for change or cancellation fees on eligible domestic bookings. This waiver is applicable for changes or cancellations made until December 8, 2025. Passengers can reschedule their journey to a future date without paying rescheduling fees within their ticket's validity, or cancel their booking for a full refund without any cancellation charge. Fare differences will apply if rescheduling leads to a higher fare.
- Fare Capping: To prevent surge pricing during this period, Air India has capped economy airfares on non-stop domestic routes from December 4th. This measure aims to ensure that automated revenue management systems do not trigger excessively high fares due to the surge in demand caused by disruptions.
Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express confirmed they are adhering to the airfare caps directive issued by the civil aviation ministry on Saturday.
Travel Aggregator Assistance
Travel aggregator ixigo has also extended support to passengers affected by IndiGo's cancellations. The platform announced it will refund the entire convenience and assured fees on tickets purchased through its platform for passengers whose IndiGo flights are cancelled between December 3rd and December 8th, 2025.
- ixigo stated its commitment to helping passengers secure quick full refunds and assist with alternate bookings during this difficult time.
Impact
This situation causes significant inconvenience and distress for thousands of passengers, leading to missed connections, business losses, and personal emergencies. For the airlines, IndiGo faces reputational damage and potential regulatory scrutiny, while Air India benefits from positive customer sentiment and potentially gains market share. Travel aggregators like ixigo are enhancing customer loyalty by offering refunds. The disruptions highlight operational challenges within the aviation sector and the importance of robust contingency planning. The civil aviation ministry's intervention shows its commitment to passenger welfare.
