India's largest airline, IndiGo, has declared its operational stability as temporary relaxations on pilot duty norms expire. The carrier stated it maintains an optimum pool of staff, including pilots, to ensure seamless operations across its network, adhering to the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FTDL) regulations. This assertion follows a period of significant disruption in December, which saw thousands of flight cancellations and delays.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed on January 20 that sustained regulatory oversight and corrective measures have stabilized IndiGo's operations. The watchdog indicated the airline now possesses an adequate number of pilots to comply with the new FDTL norms without further disruptions. Citing airline submissions, the DGCA noted IndiGo has 2,400 Pilots in Command (PICs) against a requirement of 2,280, and 2,240 First Officers compared to the required 2,050.
Background to Disruptions
In early December, IndiGo faced massive flight disruptions, cancelling 2,507 flights between December 3 and 5, impacting over 300,000 passengers. This led the DGCA to curtail the airline's winter schedule by 10 percent and impose penalties totaling ₹22.20 crore. Investigations by the DGCA identified over-optimization of operations, inadequate regulatory preparedness, and shortcomings in management structure and operational control as key reasons for the crisis.
Regulatory Exemption and Pilot Concerns
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol stated that IndiGo had received temporary exemption from specific FDTL clauses pertaining to night duty and landings, valid until February 10, to support operational stabilization. However, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has emphasized the critical importance of implementing revised FDTL rules without exemptions to address pilot fatigue and ensure air safety. FIP President C S Randhawa stressed that air safety should remain non-negotiable, urging strict adherence to regulations by all operators.
Airline's Integration of New Rules
An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed that the airline has already integrated the new set of rules into its crew rosters and planning, assuring adherence to FDTL norms and stable operations.
