GMR Airports' Bhogapuram Terminal To Open August 1

The Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram, developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited, will begin operations on August 1, 2026. With an initial capacity of 6 million passengers, this facility aims to enhance logistics and connectivity for the North Coastal Andhra Pradesh region.

The new Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram is scheduled for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 1, 2026. This greenfield project was executed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited, which operates as a subsidiary of GMR Airports Limited. The facility is equipped to manage 6 million passengers annually in its first phase, with a long-term design capacity that allows for scaling up to 40 million passengers as demand grows.

Operational Readiness and Clearances

To reach this stage, the project team successfully secured mandatory regulatory and safety approvals. These include the essential Aerodrome Licence granted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and comprehensive security clearances from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security. The facility is also fully prepared for international traffic, having received official notification as an Immigration Check Post and Customs station. Additionally, the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board has provided the necessary Consent to Operate, ensuring all environmental compliance standards are met for the upcoming launch.

Impact on Regional Connectivity

The airport is located about 50 km from Visakhapatnam and is expected to serve as the main air travel hub for regions across North Coastal Andhra, as well as parts of southern Odisha and Chhattisgarh. To support the expected influx of travelers and cargo, both central and state authorities have finished upgrading critical approach roads and transportation infrastructure. For local industries, including pharmaceuticals, IT, electronics, and seafood processing, the airport's dedicated cargo facilities are designed to reduce logistics costs and provide a faster route for exports compared to existing road or sea alternatives.

Investor Context for GMR Airports

For GMR Airports Limited, this project represents a significant addition to its portfolio of managed aviation assets. While the initial capital spending for the construction has already been deployed, the financial success of this airport will depend on how quickly it can reach high passenger utilization levels and attract international airline carriers to operate out of Bhogapuram. Investors will likely watch for the airport's ability to maintain efficient operating margins as it transitions from the construction phase to a revenue-generating commercial facility. A key monitorable in the coming quarters will be the growth in passenger traffic figures and cargo throughput, which will indicate how effectively the new infrastructure captures regional demand.
