The Dholera International Airport project has reached 80% completion, with operations expected to begin by September or October 2026. This airport is designed to support the Dholera Special Investment Region, featuring infrastructure for semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace assembly, and multi-modal transport links.
The Dholera International Airport, a key infrastructure project in Gujarat, has reached a significant milestone with 80% of construction now finished. Union Minister of Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu recently confirmed that primary aviation infrastructure, including the main runway, taxiways, and the Air Traffic Control tower, is already fully complete. Work on the passenger terminal building is currently at 75% progress.
Infrastructure and Connectivity
Designed to handle an initial annual capacity of 2 million passengers, the facility includes a 25,000-square-meter passenger terminal and a 2,500-square-meter cargo hub. The project is strategically linked to the Dholera Special Investment Region, an area currently being developed as a greenfield industrial city. To ensure efficient logistics, the airport will connect to a new six-lane National Highway and a high-speed rail corridor. The rail project, supported by a ₹20,667 crore investment sanctioned by the Central Cabinet, will feature a station located directly next to the airport terminal.
Industrial Impact and Aerospace Hub
Beyond basic air travel, the airport is intended to serve as an 'aerotropolis'—an urban center built around a major airport. It is positioned to support high-value industrial activities, most notably the semiconductor manufacturing facility currently being set up by Tata. The site will also feature specialized Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hangars.
These facilities are essential for the production of the C-295 military transport aircraft. Additionally, the region is becoming a hub for civil aviation, following an agreement with Embraer to establish a Final Assembly Line for civilian aircraft. The first 'Make in India' aircraft from this assembly line is targeted for rollout by 2028, positioning Dholera as a central location for India’s growing aerospace sector.
Operational Timeline and Next Steps
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed that all on-site construction work be finalized by September 2026. To meet the goal of operationalizing the airport by September or October, the project team is currently coordinating with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to finalize licensing requirements. Investors monitoring this development may track the progress of the final terminal fit-outs, the commissioning of the rail corridor, and further updates on industrial tenants setting up operations in the surrounding manufacturing cluster.
