Hydrogen Bus Pilot Launched
The introduction of two hydrogen-fueled shuttle buses by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in Delhi's Central Vista area is a key step in India's drive for cleaner public transport. This pilot, a collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), aims to provide green transport for government employees and visitors.
The buses, each with a 35-passenger capacity, will operate on weekdays during peak office hours. They will connect Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth metro stations with government offices, with fares set at Rs 10 and Rs 15.
While seen as a move towards sustainable public transport, this initiative uses hydrogen fuel cells. This comes at a time when Delhi and India are also investing heavily in battery-electric vehicles for public transport.
Indian Oil Corporation, a major energy company, is providing the buses and fuel support. This reflects its focus on green energy. IOCL plans significant investment, with over ₹1 lakh crore for 18 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The DMRC itself has a strong record in sustainability. It integrates solar power, uses regenerative braking, and aims for carbon neutrality by 2030. DMRC's revenue was reported at ₹8,150 crore for FY25.
