Concord Control Systems Advances ₹47 Crore Hydrogen Locomotive Project

Concord Control Systems is developing a 3,100 HP hydrogen-hybrid locomotive for NTPC through its subsidiary. The company, which reported strong FY26 profit growth and a ₹697 crore order book, is now focusing on technical validation for this clean-energy project. Investors are monitoring the execution of this complex engineering effort and the company's ability to scale such technology.

Concord Control Systems is making progress on an ambitious engineering project to convert a diesel locomotive into a 3,100-horsepower hydrogen-hybrid engine. The company, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Advanced Rail Controls Pvt. Ltd., is executing this ₹47 crore contract awarded by NTPC in January 2026. This project aims to demonstrate the viability of using hydrogen fuel cells and battery storage systems within a traditional locomotive chassis to reduce reliance on diesel.

To support the project's technical requirements, Concord recently engaged in the supply chain for specialized equipment. In August 2026, the company awarded a ₹2.48 crore order to Time Technoplast for the supply of Type IV hydrogen storage systems, which are essential for safely storing hydrogen on board. This step highlights the practical implementation phase of the project, moving beyond the planning stages.

From a financial perspective, Concord Control Systems enters this development phase with a solid foundation. For the fiscal year ending March 2026, the company reported revenue of ₹210.47 crore, a 69.11% increase compared to the previous year. Net profit also saw a significant rise, growing 88.30% to ₹42.65 crore. As of March 31, 2026, the company maintained a consolidated order book of ₹696.99 crore. Importantly, the company remains largely debt-free, which provides it with better financial flexibility to invest in research and development for new technologies like hydrogen propulsion.

However, the project involves significant technical and execution risks. Developing a 3,100 HP hydrogen-hybrid locomotive is a pioneering effort in India, involving the complex integration of hydrogen fuel cells, power electronics, and cooling systems. The company must ensure that this system meets stringent railway safety and performance standards. Any unforeseen delays in technical validation or challenges in managing the safety architecture could impact project timelines.

Investors should also consider the broader business context. While the company has shown strong growth, its stock carries a high valuation based on metrics like EV/EBITDA, which reflects high market expectations for future growth. The company’s performance remains closely tied to the government’s continued push for railway modernization and clean energy infrastructure.

The next important monitorable for shareholders is the progress of field validation and performance testing under real-world operating conditions. As the company moves toward finalizing the prototype, performance data from these tests will be crucial in determining the scalability of this technology for future railway applications.
