Cleartrip Expands Bus Network to 6.5 Lakh Routes in India

Cleartrip, owned by Flipkart, has launched 'Bus 2.0' to cover over 6.5 lakh routes across 6,000 cities. This expansion integrates bus bookings with existing flight and hotel services to capture growing demand from Gen Z and younger travelers.

Cleartrip has officially launched its upgraded bus ticketing platform, Bus 2.0, significantly broadening its service network. The company now offers bookings for over 6.5 lakh routes, reaching more than 6,000 cities and towns across the country. This expansion is designed to provide travel options in locations that often lack connectivity through traditional air or rail networks.

Access to Private and State Operators

The updated platform now provides access to approximately 95 percent of the country’s private bus inventory. By integrating services from various state transport corporations into its digital interface, Cleartrip aims to replicate the comprehensive availability previously found only at physical bus stations. This move is part of the company's broader strategy to position itself as a unified, multi-modal travel platform, allowing users to manage flights, trains, hotels, and bus tickets through a single application.

Targeting a Younger Demographic

Data from the company indicates a clear shift in user behavior, with over 55 percent of current bus bookings coming from Gen Z, students, and early-career professionals. These groups often prioritize flexibility and cost-effectiveness for short trips, weekend getaways, or as an alternative when rail travel options are unavailable. By securing this user segment early, Cleartrip is attempting to build long-term brand loyalty among younger travelers who are just beginning to make formal travel arrangements.

Context on Flipkart’s Travel Strategy

Cleartrip was founded in 2006 and has operated as a major player in the Indian online travel agency space. Since its majority acquisition by Flipkart in April 2021, the company has increasingly focused on deep integration within the e-commerce giant’s ecosystem. This latest move into road travel is a strategic effort to improve its market presence against competitors like MakeMyTrip and EaseMyTrip, which also offer diverse travel services. While the move helps expand Cleartrip’s inventory, the actual business benefit will depend on how effectively the company can manage customer service, handle potential cancellations, and maintain price competitiveness in a highly fragmented and price-sensitive bus booking sector. Investors and industry observers will likely track whether this expanded inventory leads to a meaningful increase in overall transaction volumes or if the competitive nature of the bus booking market keeps profit margins under pressure.
