With the second airport plan abandoned, the focus has shifted back to the existing Chennai International Airport in Meenambakkam, where authorities are proposing the construction of a new Terminal 5 to handle rising passenger traffic.
The proposal aims to increase the airport's annual capacity to 55 million passengers, a significant jump from the 35 million expected after current Terminal 3 upgrades are finished. Plans currently identify an underutilized triangular plot of land located between the existing two runways as the site for the new terminal. By utilizing land already within the airport's possession, officials hope to bypass the complex land acquisition issues that contributed to the stalling and eventual cancellation of the Parandur development.
To improve connectivity, the proposal includes a 5.32-km elevated corridor planned to connect the Inner Ring Road at Tambaram with Maduravoyal. This route would run along the periphery of the Adyar River, intended to reduce traffic congestion on the existing GST Road. Preliminary technical assessments conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology have indicated that such a corridor is feasible from an engineering perspective, provided that authorities prioritize the reinforcement of the river bank.
Despite the push for expansion, the project is still in its earliest conceptual phase. No final budget, construction timeline, or environmental clearance has been established. A major point of concern for aviation and city planning experts remains the site's geography. The area designated for the new terminal is low-lying and currently serves as a natural drainage channel for the airport’s runways. Experts have warned that constructing a terminal on this terrain could disrupt water flow, leading to potential waterlogging issues during monsoon seasons.
Stakeholders and the public will now track further announcements regarding feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments. While the expansion is seen as a necessary move to meet growing air travel demand in the region, the project's ultimate success will depend on how effectively authorities can address the structural and ecological challenges inherent in building on existing, sensitive airport land.
