GMR Group's new airport in Bhogapuram, near Visakhapatnam, will begin commercial flight operations on August 17. The project aims to handle six million passengers annually and is expected to improve connectivity and economic activity in India's eastern corridor.
The Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram, near Visakhapatnam, is set to begin commercial flight operations on August 17. GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Ltd (GVIAL), a subsidiary of the GMR Group, announced the launch as the airport prepares to serve as a key aviation hub for the region.
The project has been developed through a public-private partnership using the design, build, finance, operate, and transfer framework. With an initial annual passenger capacity of six million, the facility spans 2,200 acres. The infrastructure includes a 3,800-meter Code-E runway designed to accommodate large, wide-body aircraft, alongside a cargo terminal with a 25,000-metric-tonne annual capacity. This cargo terminal includes specialized cold chain facilities intended to support the local pharmaceutical and perishable goods industries.
Infrastructure and Regional Expansion
The GMR Group completed construction of the airport ahead of its original schedule. Future development plans for the site involve expanding passenger handling capacity to 40 million annually. Beyond the airport, the broader project site is designed to include an aviation hub, an aviation university, and an EduCity. The Andhra Pradesh government provided support for the project through an investment of Rs 1,583 crore, which covered land acquisition and the development of necessary connectivity infrastructure to link the airport to surrounding areas.
To ensure operational readiness, the airport has received the required aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, as well as necessary environmental, fire, and safety clearances. The launch follows a broader push for infrastructure development in the state, with other projects valued at nearly Rs 18,000 crore recently inaugurated.
Investor Context and Future Monitorables
For investors, the key aspect of this development lies in GMR Airports Ltd's ability to execute greenfield infrastructure projects within planned timelines and budgets. The GMR Group already manages several major airports across the country, and the successful commissioning of the Bhogapuram facility adds to its operational footprint.
The long-term financial impact on the company will depend on the passenger traffic growth and the success of the cargo terminal in attracting business from the regional pharmaceutical sector. Investors may track how quickly the airport reaches its planned capacity and how effectively it manages the debt associated with such large-scale capital projects. As the facility integrates into the national network, the volume of traffic and the company's ability to maintain efficient operations will be the primary metrics to watch in future quarterly updates.
