Connecting Smaller Cities to the World
This strategy is key to improving travel for passengers in India's Tier-II and Tier-III cities. The hub-and-spoke model aims to create smooth connections from smaller airports to international destinations, often building on existing programs like UDAN.
India's Vision: A Global Aviation Hub
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu is actively pushing this new model. His goal is to stop the current pattern where about 35% of Indian international travelers pass through hubs like Dubai, London, and Singapore. The plan is to develop key Indian airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, into major global transit points.
Airline's Strategic Rationale
Campbell Wilson, Air India's CEO & Managing Director, called the shift "a transformative step for Indian aviation." He noted the hub-and-spoke model will boost connectivity and make better use of national airport infrastructure. P Balaji, Air India's Group Head for Governance, Risk, Compliance and Corporate Affairs, added that expanding beyond major metros will reduce travel time and simplify international trips for more passengers.
