Gig Economy Workers Protest on New Year's Eve
On New Year's Eve, as demand for deliveries surged, delivery partners for major quick-commerce and food delivery platforms in India voiced significant concerns. Workers associated with services like Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto protested conditions including reduced incentives, the pressure from algorithms to meet tight deadlines, and critical road safety issues. The flashpoint brought the underlying tensions in India's rapidly expanding gig economy into the public spotlight.
Platform Response and CEO's Defense
Deepinder Goyal, the founder and CEO of Eternal, the parent company of Zomato and Blinkit, responded robustly to the strike calls. He stated that operations on New Year's Eve were largely unaffected, with over 4.5 lakh delivery partners completing a record 75 lakh orders. Goyal emphasized that no unusual incentives were offered and defended the broader concept of platform work, arguing that regulations should aim to fix inequalities rather than eliminate livelihoods. He highlighted that the discomfort arises from the direct visibility of the working class to the consuming class.
