Wonderla Holidays has announced the inauguration of its latest amusement park, Wonderla Chennai, a significant expansion project backed by an investment of over ₹611 crore. The new park, sprawling across 65 acres, is anticipated to generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The park is scheduled for inauguration by Chief Minister MK Stalin on December 1, 2025, and will officially open its gates to the public from December 2, 2025. Arun K. Chittilappilly, Executive Chairman and Managing Director of Wonderla Holidays, expressed that Wonderla Chennai aims to be India's most advanced and immersive amusement park.
"Wonderla Chennai is the culmination of a decade-long dream, made possible through the continued support and encouragement of the Government of Tamil Nadu. This launch marks our presence across all of South India," stated Chittilappilly. He further highlighted that the park's commitment to international safety and hygiene standards, along with its unique air-conditioned rides, will set it apart from existing competitors in Chennai's amusement park sector.
Wonderla Chennai will boast 43 rides capable of entertaining up to 6,500 visitors daily. A key attraction will be India's first Boiler and Mabillard (B&M) inverted coaster, complemented by other rides such as the Spin Mill and Sky Rail. Standard entry tickets for the park will be priced starting at ₹1,489, with special concessions offered to students and senior citizens.
The final expenditure for the park exceeded initial estimates primarily due to inflation and strategic decisions to include air-conditioned rides and expand the overall ride portfolio. The project's origins trace back to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2015 with Guidance Tamil Nadu, the State's investment promotion agency, which initially projected an investment of ₹400 crore.
Looking forward, Wonderla Holidays has outlined expansion plans targeting tier-1 cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad, while also exploring tier-2 markets like Indore. The company's ambitious vision is to establish a Wonderla park in all major Indian cities within the coming years.
Impact
This launch is a major growth catalyst for Wonderla Holidays, reinforcing its strategy to expand market reach and enhance its entertainment offerings within India. The substantial investment and projected job creation are beneficial for the local economy and the Indian tourism sector. The introduction of unique, high-thrill rides is expected to attract significant visitor numbers, thereby boosting revenue and market share. The company's aggressive expansion strategy across multiple cities indicates strong future growth potential.
