Indian wedding spending is on the rise, with average budgets reaching approximately ₹32-35 lakh in 2024, marking a significant 14% increase from the previous year. This surge is driven by a notable shift in priorities, as couples are now emphasizing meaningful and personalized celebrations over sheer extravagance. While destination weddings are gaining popularity, accounting for nearly 26% of total weddings in 2024, the majority of Indian weddings (over 60%) remain budget-conscious, with families strategically managing costs through weekday events and smaller guest lists.
The focus has moved from 'big' weddings to 'meaningful experiences.' Couples are investing more in guest comfort, elevated hospitality, gourmet food, and curated activities rather than just spectacle. Décor trends are leaning towards simpler, nature-aligned aesthetics. Budget allocation is also diversifying, with more funds directed towards guest accommodation and experiential elements, alongside traditional venue and catering costs. Flexible payment plans and early bookings (8-10 months in advance) are becoming standard practices to secure better rates and manage expenses.
Impact: This trend significantly impacts the hospitality, travel, and services sectors in India. Hotels, resorts, event planners, caterers, and experience providers can expect increased demand and higher revenue potential. The shift towards personalized experiences may also spur innovation within these industries, leading to new service offerings and business models. The increased spending on weddings is a positive indicator for consumer discretionary spending, which can have a ripple effect on the broader economy.
