Border Conflict Drives Travel Shift
Indian travellers are significantly altering their New Year travel plans, moving away from popular Southeast Asian destinations like Thailand and Cambodia due to escalating border violence. This trend signals a notable shift in holiday preferences, with emerging destinations gaining prominence.
The clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which reportedly resulted in over 100 casualties before a ceasefire, have cast a shadow over festive travel plans. This has directly impacted demand for Thailand, a long-time favourite for Indian tourists, and Cambodia, often visited as an extension of regional trips.
Financial Impact on Destinations
Ravi Gosain, president of the Indian Association of Tour Operators, noted a visible but contained impact on Thailand. "For Thailand, enquiries have softened by around 10-20%, with fresh bookings down in the range of 8–15%," he stated. While outright cancellations remained limited at 3-8%, many travellers opted to reroute their trips within the country.
Cambodia has experienced a stronger negative reaction, with enquiries down 20-35% year-on-year and cancellations ranging from 8-18%. Indian travellers began reassessing their plans within 48-72 hours of the clashes, leading to further adjustments closer to departure dates.
Emerging Favourites and Rising Demand
Rajiv Mehra, general secretary of the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality, observed that Thailand has lost some momentum, with demand approximately 5-10% lower than anticipated. Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia are now attracting significant interest due to competitive pricing.
Booking data from EaseMyTrip indicates Vietnam is a major beneficiary, with Indian traveller traffic projected to increase by about 125% in 2025. Sri Lanka has seen at least a fivefold increase in traffic compared to the previous winter. Travel companies are curating end-to-end experiences, bundling stays with activities like culinary workshops, local village dinners, and wellness programmes to retain interest.
Factors Shaping Choices
Safety perception, visa ease, flight availability, and overall value are the key decision drivers for Indian travellers. Hari Ganapathy, co-founder of Pickyourtrail, highlighted that rising airfares, driven by airline capacity constraints, are pushing travellers to focus more on affordability. Flights remain the most variable cost, with on-ground pricing seeing only a 5-7% increase.
Evolving Travel Preferences
There is a marked shift away from nightlife-centric holidays towards more personalized and experience-driven travel. Paid activities per itinerary have increased by nearly 30% over the past two years, with a further 13% rise this year. Around 65-70% of itineraries now include at least one customized experience.
Domestic Alternatives
For travellers choosing to stay closer to home, popular domestic destinations like Goa, Kerala, and the Andaman Islands continue to attract significant festive-season demand, offering viable alternatives to overseas travel.
Impact
This evolving travel landscape presents both challenges and opportunities for the Indian tourism sector. While destinations affected by conflict see reduced footfall, emerging locations and domestic tourism are poised for growth. Travel companies are adapting by offering more curated, experience-focused packages to meet changing consumer demands, potentially leading to shifts in revenue streams and investment priorities within the sector.
