Vodafone Idea (VIL) has achieved its first month of active subscriber growth in 21 months, adding approximately 20,000 active connections in September. This is a significant development after the company experienced a continuous decline for almost two years, losing an average of 1.7 million subscribers per month throughout 2024. According to a report by Jefferies, VIL’s monthly subscriber losses have moderated significantly, with projections suggesting an average of 600,000 losses in 2025, which represents a 65% improvement from the previous year’s bleeding rate. The September performance indicates a positive trend, with VIL gaining active subscribers in 15 out of 22 telecom service areas across India. Furthermore, the company acquired 300,000 new 4G data subscribers during the same month. Jefferies analysts Akshat Agarwal and Ayush Bansal stated that "VIL subscriber losses are moderating, reflecting improvement in subscriber retention."
Impact: This news has a positive impact on Vodafone Idea's stock by indicating a potential stabilization and recovery in its subscriber base, which is crucial for its long-term viability. It also significantly benefits Indus Towers, India's largest telecom infrastructure provider, as VIL is a major tenant. An improvement in VIL's financial health reduces the risk of payment defaults on tower rentals, which have previously impacted Indus Towers' performance.
