Spectrum Debt Poses Greater Threat to Vodafone Idea
Vodafone Idea Ltd. (VIL) is grappling with a debt burden that extends far beyond its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) liabilities, according to Balaji Subramanian, analyst at IIFL. While government relief on AGR dues provided a temporary reprieve, the company's spectrum payment obligations represent a more pressing and substantial financial challenge.
Looming Payment Schedule
Subramanian highlighted that spectrum debt constitutes the majority of Vodafone Idea's outstanding dues to the government. The telecom operator is slated to pay approximately ₹6,000 crore in spectrum liabilities next fiscal year. This is followed by a significant ₹15,000 crore in financial year 2028. From financial year 2029 onward, VIL faces annual payments ranging from ₹25,000 crore to ₹26,000 crore, presenting a formidable cash flow hurdle.
Investor Dilemma and Dilution
Addressing these future payments will likely require substantial financial restructuring and potentially new capital infusions. Subramanian suggested that a new equity investor could be crucial, leading to a dilution of the government's stake. In such a scenario, the government might convert further spectrum debt into equity. While successful fundraising could improve cash flow and create equity value, it comes with a significant caveat: substantial dilution for existing shareholders. The ultimate valuation will hinge on the price at which any new equity is issued.
Market Reaction
Shares of Vodafone Idea, which had previously surged up to 8% on optimism surrounding AGR repayment timelines, have since relinquished all gains. The stock is currently trading below the flat line, reflecting investor concerns over the company's ongoing financial complexities.
