Vodafone Idea Shares Rise 5% Post-Q1 Results; Analyst Sees Upside

Shares of Vodafone Idea gained around 5% on Wednesday following its first-quarter earnings for FY27. The company reported a narrowed net loss of ₹3,754 crore and improved average revenue per user (ARPU) of ₹195. While a brokerage noted potential for future growth, investors should track the firm's ongoing debt challenges and capital requirements.

Shares of Vodafone Idea saw active trading on Wednesday, climbing nearly 5% after the telecom operator released its financial results for the June quarter of the current fiscal year. The market reacted to the company's improved operational metrics, including a reduction in net losses and a rise in average revenue per user (ARPU).

Vodafone Idea reported a net loss of ₹3,754 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. This is a significant narrowing compared to the ₹6,608 crore loss recorded in the same quarter last year. Revenue for the period stood at ₹11,689 crore, marking a 6% increase compared to the previous year. A key driver for this revenue growth was the improvement in ARPU, which reached ₹195, up from ₹177 in the year-ago period. The company also saw a positive shift in its subscriber base, reporting an increase for the first time in several quarters.

Following these results, Ambit Institutional Equities initiated coverage with a positive outlook, suggesting a 45% potential upside for the stock. The brokerage firm cited the company's recent subscriber growth and sustained capital spending as indicators that its strategy to improve network quality is beginning to yield results. The analyst note also highlighted that Vodafone Idea's continued investment in network infrastructure is expected to help it retain customers and move them toward higher-value tariff plans.

Despite the operational improvements, the company faces significant challenges that investors should consider. The most prominent risk remains the company's substantial debt obligations, which require consistent cash flow to manage. Additionally, the telecom sector is capital-intensive, meaning the company must continue to secure funding to support its network expansion and competitive positioning. Future financial health will also depend on regulatory outcomes, particularly regarding adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues and government policy, which have been points of contention in the past.

Broader sector trends are also influencing the stock. Competitors, including Bharti Airtel, have recently adjusted their tariff structures by discontinuing low-end prepaid plans, effectively increasing entry-level costs for users. These industry-wide moves toward higher tariffs generally benefit the sector's ARPU, potentially providing a supporting factor for Vodafone Idea as it attempts to improve its own revenue metrics.

Moving forward, the primary focus for investors will be the company's ability to maintain these subscriber gains and manage its debt repayment schedule. Market participants will likely track upcoming announcements regarding capital fundraising efforts, which are essential for accelerating network investments and ensuring the company remains competitive in a market dominated by larger players.
