Vodafone Idea Plans ₹45,000 Crore Network Spend in 3-Year Growth Push

Vodafone Idea has reaffirmed a three-year, ₹45,000 crore network investment plan aimed at achieving double-digit revenue growth and tripling cash EBITDA. This follows Q1 FY27 results that showed a narrowed net loss and improved ARPU. Investors are monitoring whether this capital expenditure can help the company recover market share against larger rivals in a highly competitive sector.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has reaffirmed its three-year growth strategy, anchored by a significant ₹45,000 crore ($4.72 billion) investment in network infrastructure. The company’s stated goal is to achieve double-digit revenue growth and triple its cash EBITDA. This announcement follows the release of its first-quarter financial results for FY27, which provided early evidence of operational improvement as the company attempts a financial turnaround.

In the quarter ending June 30, 2026, Vodafone Idea reported revenue of ₹11,689 crore, representing a 6% increase compared to the same period last year. The net loss narrowed significantly to ₹3,754 crore, down from a loss of ₹6,611 crore in the year-ago period. A key contributor to these results was the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), which rose 10.2% to ₹195, suggesting that customers are spending more on the network.

The ₹45,000 crore capital expenditure plan focuses on upgrading network reach and quality to keep pace with industry standards. To initiate this rollout, the company has already placed equipment orders worth ₹9,000 crore with global technology partners, including Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung. The operational roadmap includes the deployment of approximately 3,500 new 4G sites every month. Furthermore, the company intends to expand its 5G footprint to cover over 200 additional cities in the coming quarters, a critical requirement for maintaining competitiveness.

Funding remains the most essential factor for this expansion. The company has secured an initial tranche of ₹6,400 crore from a consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India. Management indicated that discussions for additional capital are ongoing with both public and private lenders. With the Indian government holding a stake of nearly 50% following the conversion of dues into equity, the company has a unique ownership structure that differentiates it from private-sector peers.

Despite the clear investment goals, the company faces significant challenges. The Indian telecom sector remains intensely competitive, with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel holding dominant market positions. Investors will likely track the company's ability to execute this ambitious rollout schedule without delays or cost overruns. The primary risk for shareholders remains the high debt burden and the challenge of successfully retaining and growing the subscriber base while funding such large-scale capital projects. Future updates on lender negotiations, project commissioning timelines, and continued ARPU improvement will be critical monitorables for the market.
