Vodafone Idea Eyes SBI-Led Bank Funding for ₹45,000 Cr Capex

Vodafone Idea is in advanced talks with a consortium of public sector banks to secure funding for its massive ₹45,000 crore three-year capital spending plan. The company has already secured an initial ₹6,400 crore tranche, signaling progress as it looks to upgrade its network. Investors will closely track the final closure of these debt deals to support its growth strategy.

Vodafone Idea is making progress in securing financing as it works toward executing a major capital expenditure plan worth ₹45,000 crore over the next three years. The company confirmed it is in advanced discussions with a consortium of public sector banks, led by the State Bank of India (SBI), to close the funding requirements necessary to boost its network infrastructure and competitive standing.

The telecom operator is pursuing a three-pronged financial strategy to fund this expansion, which includes partnering with public sector banks, engaging with private lenders, and securing external commercial borrowings. This capital is critical for the company as it attempts to accelerate its network rollout and improve service quality in a highly competitive Indian telecom market.

Financial Results and Progress

Recent performance metrics show some improvements for the company. In the first quarter of the fiscal year 2027, Vodafone Idea reported a revenue of ₹11,689 crore, reflecting a 6% increase compared to the previous year. The company’s net loss also narrowed to ₹3,754 crore from ₹6,608 crore in the same quarter last year, partly aided by a 10.2% growth in average revenue per user (ARPU), which now stands at ₹195. Furthermore, the company reported its first positive net subscriber addition since its merger, reaching a total base of 193.1 million.

Capital Expenditure and Liquidity

To translate these financial improvements into operational growth, the company has already secured an initial funding tranche of ₹6,400 crore. This includes capital from warrant proceeds and various debt facilities. As of June 30, 2026, the company held a cash and bank balance of ₹6,558 crore, while its outstanding bank debt was reported at ₹211 crore.

The management team has already placed equipment orders worth ₹9,000 crore, with execution and deliveries currently underway. This reflects a shift toward active network expansion, a key requirement for retaining and growing the subscriber base in an era where data consumption is rapidly increasing.

Challenges and Monitorables

Despite these positive steps, the road ahead remains challenging. The success of the ₹45,000 crore investment plan depends heavily on the company's ability to secure the full debt funding, which involves complex negotiations with multiple financial institutions. If the company faces delays in finalizing these credit lines, it could potentially impact the pace of its network rollout or strain its cash position.

Investors will continue to watch for the official closure of the debt deals with the SBI-led consortium. Additionally, the execution of the planned capital expenditure and the ability to maintain the current momentum in subscriber growth will be important factors to monitor. The sustainability of the company's financial recovery remains a central point for those tracking its long-term viability.
