Vodafone Idea Eyes Growth After Cutting AGR Liability to ₹64,046 Crore

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has shifted focus to operational execution after finalizing its statutory liability at ₹64,046 crore, down from an estimated ₹87,695 crore. This resolution helped the company post a one-time net profit of ₹34,552 crore in FY26. With a subscriber base of 192.8 million, Vi now plans to invest ₹45,000 crore in network expansion, though securing long-term funding remains a critical monitorable amid stiff competition.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) is entering a new phase of its business strategy, aiming to move from debt resolution to active network expansion. The company has officially closed the book on its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) liability, finalizing it at ₹64,046 crore, which is a notable decrease from the provisional figure of ₹87,695 crore. This reduction provided the company with the financial clarity needed to plan for future operations, resulting in a one-time accounting profit of ₹34,552 crore for the fiscal year 2026.

While the headline profit figure is significant, it is important for investors to distinguish this one-time gain from the company’s day-to-day business performance. During FY26, Vi reported revenue of ₹44,873 crore, a 3% increase from the previous year, while its EBITDA rose by 4.8% to ₹19,003 crore. The company management highlighted that this growth was achieved despite a relatively cautious approach to spending on network infrastructure compared to its main rivals, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

As of March 31, 2026, the company reported a stabilized subscriber base of 192.8 million. Management has noted positive monthly user additions since February 2026, suggesting that its efforts to improve 4G coverage and distribution are beginning to show results. The company is now gearing up for a significant network investment program, with plans to spend ₹45,000 crore by the end of FY29. This capital will be directed toward network enhancements and expanding its footprint in high-growth areas like the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud services, and smart metering.

However, the company’s path forward involves balancing these ambitious expansion plans with competitive pressures and funding requirements. While the AGR resolution removes a major overhang, Vi continues to carry substantial statutory debt. Successfully executing the planned ₹45,000 crore expansion will require the company to secure long-term funding, a process that is currently in discussion with lenders. Furthermore, the company must continue to attract and retain subscribers in a market dominated by larger players who have already invested heavily in 5G and other advanced technologies.

Investors should monitor the company’s ability to secure fresh funding for its network expansion plans, as this will determine the speed and quality of its rollout. Additionally, the company’s ability to sustain the positive trend in subscriber additions and improve its operational cash flow—independent of accounting adjustments—will be critical. Other important areas to track include updates on government rollout obligations, as the company has faced previous scrutiny from the Department of Telecommunications regarding its network coverage targets.
