Vodafone Idea Dismisses Airtel 5G Threat; Funding Watch Continues

Vodafone Idea CEO Abhijit Kishore claims Airtel’s ‘Fast Lane’ service has not hurt its postpaid growth, reporting 31.9 million subscribers. However, analysts highlight that core mobile user numbers show a different trend when excluding machine-to-machine connections. The company's primary focus remains securing a ₹35,000 crore bank loan to fund a major network expansion, which investors are monitoring closely.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has pushed back against concerns regarding competition from rival Bharti Airtel’s 'Fast Lane' 5G service. During the company’s recent earnings commentary, CEO Abhijit Kishore stated that Airtel’s premium offering, which uses network slicing to provide higher speeds to select users, has not impacted Vi’s postpaid subscriber base. The company reported a total postpaid base of 31.9 million, citing consistent net additions.

While the headline numbers suggest growth, market analysts point to a distinction in the quality of these subscribers. A portion of this growth includes machine-to-machine (M2M) connections—such as smart meters and vehicle tracking systems—rather than traditional individual mobile phone users. When stripping out these M2M connections, some industry data suggests a decline in core mobile postpaid users. Investors often look closely at this distinction because core mobile customers generally provide more stable and predictable revenue compared to M2M contracts.

Financially, Vodafone Idea showed signs of an operational turnaround in the June quarter (Q1 FY27). The company reported revenue of ₹11,689 crore, reflecting a 6% year-on-year increase. Its net loss narrowed to ₹3,754 crore compared to ₹6,608 crore in the same period last year, and it achieved an EBITDA margin of 43.1%. The average revenue per user (ARPU), a key metric for telecom profitability, grew 10.2% to ₹195, indicating that the company’s focus on customer migration from 2G to 4G and 5G is beginning to reflect in its financial performance.

Despite the improved operating numbers, the company’s ability to sustain this momentum depends heavily on its capital expansion plans. Vodafone Idea is currently working to secure a ₹35,000 crore bank debt package, led by a consortium including the State Bank of India. This funding is essential to support the company’s larger ₹45,000 crore three-year network expansion project. While the company has secured an initial ₹6,400 crore tranche, the closure of the full debt package remains a critical financial hurdle. Any delay in this funding could impact the timeline for deploying new 4G and 5G sites, which are necessary to compete effectively against rivals.

Shares of Vodafone Idea traded higher on Tuesday, gaining approximately 1-3% as the market reacted to the narrowed losses and management's commentary on steady growth. For investors, the most important updates to follow in the coming quarters will be the finalization of the bank funding package and the actual speed of network rollout, as these will determine whether the company can successfully defend its market share against competitors with stronger balance sheets.
