Vodafone Idea faces financial uncertainty as it awaits the final outcome of a reassessment of its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues.
The company carries ₹87,685 crore in AGR dues from FY07 to FY19, frozen by the government last December after a Supreme Court order. While these dues undergo review, amounts for FY18 and FY19, finalized by the Supreme Court in 2020, are still payable.
AGR Dues Being Reviewed
CEO Abhijit Kishore confirmed the reassessment is underway and Vodafone Idea has submitted all documentation. He expects further details once the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) provides clarity. A DoT committee is set to decide on the reassessment by January 30, 2026.
Tariffs Called Unsustainable
Beyond AGR, Kishore expressed serious concerns about current telecom pricing. He stated that industry-wide tariff levels are unsustainable for long-term operations. While some price adjustments have occurred, Vodafone Idea stresses the need for structural tariff revisions that no operator has yet implemented.
Focus on AI Development
Kishore also highlighted Vodafone Idea's move into proprietary AI development, not just consumption. The company is pursuing a three-pronged AI strategy—assistive, agentic, and sovereign—to boost operational productivity and build customer solutions.
Vodafone Idea shares were down 1% midday Friday, underperforming the benchmark Nifty 50's 1.3% decline.
