Vodafone Idea Adds Free Roaming to Plans to Curb Churn

Vodafone Idea has integrated free international roaming into select prepaid, postpaid, and enterprise plans to retain high-value users. While aimed at reducing churn, analysts warn the strategy could pressure short-term revenue per user and highlight ongoing cash flow challenges.

Vodafone Idea has updated its service strategy by including free international roaming in its prepaid, postpaid, and enterprise plans. Previously, these benefits were treated as premium add-ons. Now, postpaid plans starting at Rs 501, enterprise accounts starting at Rs 451, and specific annual prepaid unlimited data packs include these benefits. This move signals a change in direction, as the company pivots away from the industry standard of offering OTT bundles and AI-driven software, focusing instead on utility for high-value users.

The primary goal is to lower subscriber churn. By offering these benefits, Vodafone Idea aims to keep customers loyal, especially those who travel frequently. The company hopes to encourage prepaid users to opt for annual recharge cycles, which would help improve its working capital. While this may boost subscriber retention, analysts at Nomura have noted that the strategy could temporarily put pressure on the average revenue per user, or ARPU.

From an investment perspective, this shift comes with challenges. While the company is looking for growth, analysts have maintained a neutral stance on the stock. They highlight that Vodafone Idea continues to face persistent cash flow constraints. Additionally, the stock is currently trading at a valuation premium when compared to some of its peers. These factors suggest that investors are closely watching the company’s ability to balance growth with financial stability.

The competitive landscape also remains a key factor. Bharti Airtel, a major competitor, holds a larger share of its user base in the postpaid category—roughly 8% compared to Vodafone Idea’s 6%. If international roaming becomes a standard industry offering, Bharti Airtel may need to review its own strategy. However, market analysts do not expect an immediate aggressive response from Airtel. For now, the larger telecommunications sector is looking toward structural pricing adjustments. Market expectations are leaning toward a potential tariff hike of about 15% by the third quarter of fiscal year 2027.

Looking ahead, the long-term outlook for the sector remains focused on growth, with projected EBITDA compound annual growth rates of 14% for both Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio through fiscal 2029. For investors, the next critical monitorable is whether Vodafone Idea can successfully use this roaming strategy to grow its subscriber base without negatively affecting its profitability or cash flow in the long run. Market watchers will also track the implementation of anticipated tariff hikes and the company's progress in managing its debt and cash position.
