The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a digital consent acquisition framework and a Do Not Disturb (DND) mobile app to combat spam and fraudulent calls. TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti urged users to report spam via the app for permanent disconnection of offending numbers. TRAI's Bold Move: New App & Rules to Crush Spam Calls, Shielding Millions & Financial Firms!

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is rolling out significant new measures aimed at protecting subscribers from the pervasive nuisance of spam and fraudulent communications.

New Framework for Spam Control

  • TRAI has introduced a digital consent acquisition framework, allowing consumers to manage and grant permission for receiving communications.
  • A key component is the new Do Not Disturb (DND) mobile application, designed to simplify the reporting process for unwanted calls and messages.
  • TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti highlighted that simply blocking numbers on devices is insufficient to stop spam.

Importance of Reporting

  • Lahoti urged approximately 116 crore mobile subscribers in India to actively report spam calls and SMS through the DND app or to their service providers.
  • He explained that user reports empower TRAI and telecom service providers to trace, verify, and permanently disconnect the mobile numbers used for such offending communications.
  • Currently, only about 28 crore subscribers are registered in the existing DND registry.

Combating Financial Fraud

  • In a move to enhance cybersecurity and prevent online financial fraud, TRAI has issued a directive to financial entities.
  • Banks, mutual fund firms, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), and insurance firms are now mandated to adopt a '1600' numbering series for their communications.
  • This standardized numbering series is expected to improve the traceability and legitimacy of communications from these vital financial service providers.

Government Support and Vision

  • Union Minister of State for Communications, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, in a video message, reiterated India's commitment to reliable and high-quality telecom connectivity.
  • He noted ongoing efforts to strengthen service quality under the Telecommunications Act, 2023.
  • Odisha's chief secretary, Manoj Ahuja, emphasized the critical role of telecom services in public safety and disaster management, drawing from the state's experience with natural calamities like cyclones and tsunami alerts.

Impact

  • These measures are expected to improve subscriber trust and reduce losses from fraudulent activities.
  • Telecom operators will face increased responsibility in managing subscriber consent and acting on complaints.
  • Financial institutions will need to implement new systems to comply with the '1600' numbering series directive.
  • Consumers should benefit from a cleaner communication environment and better protection against scams.

Impact Rating (0–10): 7
