Reliance Jio Targets Global Markets With Homegrown 5G Tech

Reliance Jio is aiming to sell its proprietary 5G technology, including radio and AI tools, to international telecom operators. This move builds on its domestic 5G success and comes ahead of a planned IPO. Investors are watching how the company manages global expansion alongside its ongoing business growth and financial targets.

Reliance Jio is preparing to take its homegrown 5G technology to international markets. The company, which has built a massive 5G network in India with over 268 million 5G users as of mid-2026, is now looking to offer its technology stack to telecom operators worldwide. This move marks a shift from being primarily a connectivity service provider to becoming a global technology vendor.

Proprietary 5G Technology Stack

Jio has developed a comprehensive 5G suite in-house. This includes cloud-native radio access networks, 5G core systems, and AI-driven automation tools. By offering these solutions, the company aims to help other global telecom operators set up, manage, or upgrade their 5G infrastructure more efficiently. This international strategy relies on the experience gained from executing one of the world's largest 5G rollouts in India.

Strategic Context and IPO Plans

This global expansion is part of a broader growth strategy for Jio Platforms. In June 2026, the company filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) for a planned IPO. The proceeds from the offering are intended to be used for debt reduction at its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, and to fund further investments in 5G and AI infrastructure.

The financial foundation for this expansion appears solid. For the financial year 2026, Jio’s digital services arm reported revenue of ₹1,46,885 crore, a 14.6% increase from the previous year. The company posted a net profit of ₹30,049 crore, with operating margins at 51.9%. Shares of the parent company, Reliance Industries, closed at approximately ₹1,316 on August 21, 2026.

Market Risks and Execution

While the technology play offers new growth avenues, international expansion carries significant execution risks. Scaling technology solutions across different global markets is complex and faces intense competition from established international tech vendors.

Investors are also looking at the broader health of Reliance Industries. The company's core Oil-to-Chemicals business continues to face pressure from geopolitical tensions and rising logistical costs, which can affect overall group performance. Additionally, the timeline for the upcoming Jio Platforms IPO, currently expected between August and October 2026, remains subject to market volatility.

Going forward, the key monitorable for investors will be any announcements regarding specific global contracts or partnerships. The successful execution of these international projects, combined with the progress of the planned IPO, will be important factors to track.
